This photograph shows images of glucose and fatty acid uptake in the heart using positron emission tomography. Generally, glucose and fatty acids are alternative substrates for energy production. During fasting when there are high fatty acid levels in the blood, myocardial fatty acid uptake is preferred, unlike conditions in which glucose uptake is promoted (insulin). See article
